the doors.

a.structure b.destruction c.an illusion d.all above

“But is he who opens a door and he who closes it the same being? The gestures that make us conscious of security, of freedom are rooted in a profound depth of being. Indeed, it is because of this ‘depth’ that they become so normally symbolical.”

gaston bachelard, poetics of space.

swoon! coming back to this book is like slipping on an old pair of tracky dacks: cliched, a little daggy, but oh-so-comforting.

I love this. I don't really know why I love it so much because if I'm being honest, my appreciation of 'art' is almost as cultured as my appreciation of food but there's something about 'doors' being a representation of life/home/personality that I feel almost compelled to go home and get the wife [who is good at this sort of thing] to make home on all our walls.

You're a smart cookie Lauren, why has this made such an impact on me?

rob, i have no idea. :)

if you're talking about the quote from the book - then you should go and buy the book (or order it from amazon, or whatever). because, in terms of life/home/personality, there's loads of rad stuff in it.

if you're talking about the image, then you should read arundhati roy's god of small things. the work is lifted from a line in it "red is the colour of a wooden door chip".

Couldn't care about the quote :)

Best order a book celebrating small things then, wonder if it has adland brains in it?

yes, you should read that book. i think it's over the heads of adland i'm afraid ;)

and maybe, one day, when you have a place of your own, with your fabulous art collection, i'll recreate that work for you in full. on site. heh.
