overqualified.
i went for a job today with the arts council of england and didn't get it.
they said i was overqualified and would be bored. i've never been overqualified in my fucking life!
i can't work out whether this is the most patronising thing i've ever heard, or whether i should bask in the glory, despite continued unemployment.

Id take it as a compliment.
Write back to them and say that although they said you were over qualified for this role, you would love to be informed of any jobs more suitable for your qualifications...
Ah bugger. I'm sorry to hear that.
I'd do what Rob suggests.
thanks guys. i'll take you up on that suggestion.
Yeah...I'd burn the building down
yes anonymous, i'm often into spineless acts too.
sorry...I was watching 'office space'...what I really meant is that you should steal their stapler.
Okay, you want constructive, I've been through a million of these things; from being under to over so here:
a) tell them that the job fits your career goals
b) tell them that you're happy to accept a position at that level
c) tell them that you're planning to stick around for a while (even if you're not) - that's really what they're worried about.
d) keep a packet of matches handy
oh yeah...I forgot to ask...how badly do you want this job?
If you do want it...push.
Push hard.
Take no for an answer - but only if it's the fifth, sixth, seventh time you've heard it.
Go on!
sorry about that short retort earlier anonymous. i assumed you were one of those nutty anonymous types that goes around making stupid comments on people's blogs, just to pick fights.
now that you mention office space, i get it! that movie is fucking hilarious!
thanks for the advice and please, don't be afraid to use your name here.
Hey Lauren,
I'd be basking. My next step would depend on how much I really wanted the job. I got my first job in ad land cause I just kept on their backs till they gave in :). I'd have to feel really passionate about a job to do that again though. I also tend to believe that it is their loss, and there is something else you are supposed to be doing.
But then, you shouldn't really take any notice of someone like me who just resigned anyway!
hey jade,
considering you just resigned from a shitty job and risked everything, i'm quite happy to take advice from you. ha!
i'm ok about the whole thing really. it's the first actual job application i had here, but i just got a bit of a shock at a response i've never had before.
i've spent the day getting 'back on the horse' and know that i'll find something.
thankfully my identity is not tied up in this whole thing.
